More than thirty attended the seminars during which Roy drew from 30 years of agricultural experience in Central Africa.
Tuesday and Wednesday were classes, which the women thoroughly enjoyed, but the real fun was, as Roy had predicted, on day three when we met out at the 30-acre Widow Garden. Five hours of practice and instruction and FUN was enjoyed by all.
Among the wisdom gained by PHC widows who attended the Gardening Seminar was:
- - the three food groups (basis for gardening/nutrition)
- - Composting
- - NOT burning (as in slash and burn farming)
- - new fruit trees to try
- - how to plant and grow trees and vegetables
- - starting a nursery
Every woman who attended the seminar for all three days received a brand new machete. You might have thought the machetes were made of gold from the response of the widows to this generous gift provided for by friends of PHC.
Many thanks to Roy Danforth for his excellent work. PHC widows are excited to get started on this seasons garden. With the new rains only six weeks or so away, they have just the right amount of time to get organized.
